They wanted to adopt Jeanette but Chloa Scovil said "No. . . have 8 children but none to give away." Browns helped Jeanette through Mankato State Teachers College. Had Fair Elementary School in Golden Valley, MN named after her (Jeanette Fair was a muched loved principal at the school for many years). The school was later closed and reopened as FAIR School of the Arts - Fine Arts Interdisciplinary Resouce School. 48 | George Anthony Halek, age 94, died Friday, August 2, 2013 at the Woodlands, MethWick Community, Cedar Rapids, of age related illness. Funeral services will be held in Minnesota at a later date. He was born in Minneapolis, MN on April 15, 1919 to Joseph and Angela Halek. He was married to Margaret (Fair) Halek from 1950 – 1974. He is survived by his children; Mary Cherrico (Gene), of Cedar Rapids, Dolores Carr (James) of Lino Lakes, MN, Megan MacLeod (John) of St. Anthony, MN, Judith Halek of New York City, NY and Anthony Halek (Louise) of Golden Valley, MN. George had 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers; Stanley, Lawrence and John and sister; Mary. George enlisted in the Army during WWII and served in Europe. He retired from FMC, Minneapolis, MN, after working 40 years as a draftsman. His passion was golf; his role model Sam Snead. He enjoyed teaching his children to fish with cane poles and bobbers and dancing with his daughters every Saturday during the Lawrence Welk Show. Any Clint Eastwood movie was his favorite. George was always eager for a good game of cribbage. A loving friendship with Gladys Hrdlicka enriched and blessed his final years.
